Achievers Academic Tutor Job at Kent School District
This is a temporary position and there are up to 4 positions available.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of Manager of College and Career Readiness and in partnership with GEAR UP Student Success Specialists and school leadership, this position will guide students toward academic and personal excellence utilizing tutoring strategies obtained through provided training consistent with the mission and primary goals and objectives of GEAR UP Achievers South King County. Tutors will serve students in-person during and/or after the school day in core academic subjects to support student learning. Delivery method of tutoring services will be in accordance with the District’s in-person and/or remote learning plans. The tutor will be a part of a team of other tutors and attend 2-hour paid weekly team meetings for ongoing training, support, and professional development.
GEAR UP is an acronym for Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, a federal program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. GEAR UP is a national college-readiness program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. This position is funded with Department of Education grant funds, which are authorized through Summer 2025. Continued employment is dependent upon the availability of funds and the District’s continued achievement of grant goals.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

E = ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supports a variety of teachers and/or students in content area classrooms by using tutoring strategies to strengthen student understanding (E)
Provide small group instruction and/or one-on-one instruction for GEAR UP cohort students during assigned hours. (E)
Maintain log of tutoring activities delivered to students as directed by GEAR UP Student Success Specialist. (E)
Assist GEAR UP Student Success Specialist in teaching study skills and other aspects of college preparation. (E)
Assist in developing a resource file of enrichment materials for use in tutorial sessions (E)
Assist GEAR UP Student Success Specialist and teachers to identify at-risk students in need of academic support services. (E)
Participates in professional learning for content area information, curriculum, and instructional practices. Note: All time in GEAR UP training and meetings will be paid. (E)
Attends weekly meetings, trainings, and/or GEAR UP events as directed by GEAR UP Student Success Specialist. (E)
Interacts appropriately and in a culturally responsive manner orally and in writing to all stakeholders, including students, colleagues, and families. (E)
Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor, with input from school and district leadership, as related to student success in the scope of these responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma, GED (General Education Diploma), OR equivalent.
- Currently enrolled in a technical/vocational, two- or four-year postsecondary program.
- Minimum 2.5 grade point average.
- Demonstrated ability to follow directions with a minimum of supervision and complete assigned task(s) in a timely manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated academic success in core subject areas, especially math, science, and English.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community members.
- Ability to handle confidential matters in an ethical manner.
- Interest in supporting high school students succeed academically.
Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, health (TB), and/or other employment clearance.

- Experience with tutoring, academic and counseling programming preferred.
- Multi-lingual language proficiency.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Environment:
- Daily activity is performed in an office environment in a high school or virtual setting where appropriate.
- Tutoring sessions are provided by appointment and/or student drop-in hours based on candidate's availability and not to exceed 12 hours per week, between the hours of 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM Monday - Friday with the exception of school closure days.
- Must provide own transportation to/from school(s) and other locations where meetings are held.
- Occasionally required to travel to attend conferences, events, or other professional development activities, as approved by immediate supervisor.
- Subject to frequent interruptions and extensive contact with staff and the public.
- Indoor and outdoor environment.
- A device will be provided by the District to deliver tutoring sessions and complete other tasks as assigned, including, but not limited to service logging and tracking.

Physical demands:
- Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching, and reaching to retrieve and maintain files and records.
- Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment, computer keyboard, and other equipment necessary to complete the required duties.
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone.
- Visual ability to read, and to prepare/process documents and to monitor various services and personnel.
- Sitting for extended periods.
- Standing for extended periods.
- Walking over rough or uneven surfaces.
- Climbing, occasional use of stepladders.
- Physical activity may be required, which could include lifting to fifty pounds, storing of materials and equipment, transporting tools and parts
