ACCOMMODATION AND LEAVE SPECIALIST Job at University of Wisconsin–Madison
Under the general direction by the HR Associate Director at ASU, the Accommodation and Leave Specialist independently provides professional, high-level human resources services in the areas of reasonable accommodations; protected leave of absence entitlements, including FMLA/WFMLA; and related programs.
This position serves UW-Madison employees and their managers by providing compassionate assistance and resources. The Accommodation and Leave Specialist is responsible for the timely and comprehensive facilitation and case management of disability accommodation requests and medical leave for the departments and divisions ASU supports. The Accommodation and Leave Specialist stays up to date with evolving guidance and regulations in order to provide accurate determinations and eligibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Wisconsin Fair Employment Law, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the Wisconsin Family & Medical Leave Act.
Responsibilities:
- Provides high level HR consultation and case management in the area of reasonable accommodations, in accordance with federal and state regulations
- Facilitates the interactive process with employees, management, health care providers, and campus disability partners for reasonable accommodation requests
- Provides expert professional advice to employees and management on reasonable accommodation processes and issues
- Proactively advises and consults with department managers, health care professionals, and campus disability partners to identify the need for or changes in accommodation, to assess reasonableness of the requested accommodation, and to obtain required supporting medical information
- Provides consultation and required notifications regarding family and medical leave of absence to employees, including making accurate status determinations
- Identifies appropriate types of family and medical leave based on individual situations
- Explains processes for requesting family and medical leave of absence, including documentation required and approval period
- Creates and maintains accurate records with strong attention to detail
- Develops and delivers HR related trainings in collaboration with campus partners and stakeholders
- Analyzes, interprets, and applies HR data, laws, regulations, and policies in a fast-paced work environment
- Prioritizes workload to ensure legal compliance and responsive customer service
- Exercises good judgment, confidentiality and discretion in all duties
- 40% Consults with employees, disabilities representatives, managers, supervisors, and other campus stakeholders on complex disability-related employment matters and provides solution recommendations according to established policies, laws, and best practices
- 15% Disseminates disability information and resources to employees and their advocates to ensure understanding of disability rights and responsibilities
- 15% Drafts, analyzes, and compiles documentation to demonstrate compliance and good-faith efforts with regulations, policies, and procedures
- 10% Develops, delivers, and promotes training programs and resource materials for various stakeholder groups to disseminate accurate information and provide guidance with regards to disability services
- 10% Interpret and administer family and medical leave programs in accordance with the applicable federal and state employment laws (FMLA, WFMLA, etc.) and university policies
- 5% Serves as a subject matter expert and provides guidance on FMLA/WFMLA to employees and supervisors
- 5% Develops and provides leave trainings to HR campus partners

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
- Prior experience working with individuals with disabilities
- Experience with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and reasonable accommodations, FMLA and other protected leave
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with individuals
- Demonstrated ability to understand both individual employee and organizational needs and to provide proactive and sound guidance
- Experience presenting complex ideas and information in a way that is understandable and appropriate for the audience
Preferred:
- Experience working with employees and students in a college/university setting
- Knowledge of complex HR-related laws, rules, and policies and the ability to interpret and analyze case-specific facts and circumstances, and accurately apply appropriate situational responses based on legal requirements and best practices quickly and independently
- Prior broad-based professional human resources experience

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Minimum $52,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The minimum salary for this position is $52,000 but actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
