The Archival Technical Services unit at Ohio State University Libraries (University Libraries) is looking for an Accessioning Archivist to join our expanded Intake & Accessioning program. The Accessioning Archivist will join a team of collaborative accessioning colleagues in building a program that is centered in archival standards and able to innovatively meet the challenges of our broad and fast-paced collecting programs. Job Description:

The Accessioning Archivist leads the rapid-turnaround accessioning program and performs routine accessioning (including selected processing at the time of accession) for collections of various size, format, and complexity, and manages archival supply operations for the unit and partner units.

The Accessioning Archivist utilizes their archival accessioning and/or processing experience, their thorough knowledge of archival standards and best practices, and their experience effectively leading and executing complex projects to lead the rapid-turnaround accessioning program, which actively supports the teaching and research objectives of University Libraries Special Collections by ensuring timely completion of accessioning requests. The Accessioning Archivist routinely performs full archival processing during accessioning for archival materials in a wide range of size, format, and complexity. The Accessioning Archivist completes routine accessioning and processing activities independently and leads projects to accession and/or process collections collaboratively with colleagues across the Archival Technical Services unit.

Additionally, the Accessioning Archivist manages archival supply operations for the Archival Technical Services unit and partner units. The Accessioning Archivist is responsible for determining and managing spending of the shared archival supplies budget and collaborates with colleagues in partner units to identify supply needs. The Accessioning Archivist places archival supply orders with vendors, tracks and manages on-site supply stock, and is responsible for managing the unit’s PCard.

The Accessioning Archivist assists in the supervision of student employees supporting the work of the Intake & Accessioning program and collaborates with unit colleagues to provide training and feedback to student employees.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in a relevant field focusing on archives, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 4 years’ experience accessioning and/or processing archival collections, including demonstrated experience successfully accessioning and/or processing collections of high complexity. Demonstrated experience applying the standards and best practices of the archival profession. Experience developing plans for and/or managing the execution of all phases of archival accessioning and/or processing projects of varied size and complexity. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative environment.

Desired Qualifications:

Five or more years’ experience accessioning and/or processing archival collections. Experience supervising student employees, interns, volunteers (or an equivalent level of supervision), preferably in an archival setting. Ability to provide effective training for archival tasks, including the ability to effectively hold others accountable for completing these tasks with a high degree of accuracy. Experience managing budgets.

About the Department:

The Archival Technical Services unit at The Ohio State University Libraries is comprised of two program areas: Intake & Accessioning and Collections Management. The unit is responsible for a broad range of archival activities, including, but not limited to: accessioning; creating, remediating, and maintaining archival description; processing; creating and maintaining appropriate materials housing; facilitating storage and retrieval of materials; managing archival projects; and coordinating archival operations and logistics in support of this work.

The Accessioning Archivist is in the Intake & Accessioning program area of the Archival Technical Services unit. The Intake & Accessioning program works collaboratively to create access to materials acquired by the Libraries’ Special Collections units, beginning with coordination of complex logistical and administrative components, and culminating in accessioning workflows (including both preliminary processing and full archival processing at the time of accession).

The Archival Technical Services unit has direct responsibility for archival technical services activities for Thompson Library Special Collections units (Rare Books and Manuscripts Library, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute, Hilandar Research Library) and Archives units (University Archives, Ohio Public Policy Archives, Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Archives), and collaborates with the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum on selected activities for their holdings.
