Academic Tutor (LE) Job at Linn-Benton Community College
This position performs a variety of tutoring duties depending on the department and assignment.
Education and Experience:
Must be a current Linn Benton Community College student in good standing and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of the courses you wish to tutor, as demonstrated by a grade of A or B earned within the past one to two years.
Recommendation of an
LBCC
instructor in the subject area tutoring. Preference will be given to candidates who have successfully completed the courses tutored. Must have overall GPA of 2.5 or higher and no serious student conduct/disciplinary history.

Knowledge and Skills: Requires strong academic competence in the courses tutored, as determined by course instructor. Must have well-developed interpersonal communication skills and study group facilitation skills.
Abilities: Requires the ability to independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position. Must have the ability to learn and employ effective tutoring methods to meet tutor program objectives. Requires the ability to respond sensitively to diverse student needs. Requires ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written English.
Prefer candidates who have experience facilitating group learning experiences.
Prefer candidates who are knowledgeable about study skills and group communication theory.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to carry on routine conversations.
Work is performed in the Learning Center, classroom/lab areas, or online, with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.
Essential Duties:
Work is performed in the Learning Center, classroom/lab areas, or online, with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.
- Meets with students during scheduled times to assist them in learning course material.
Facilitates student learning by establishing a supportive environment and helping students identify gaps in their understanding of course concepts.
Promotes group tutoring session attendance by regularly notifying students of session schedule. Implements group interaction activities to make sessions helpful to all students.
Shows students how to learn, along with what to learn.
Offers a variety of approaches or methods to help students understand course concepts.
Promotes students’ self-reliance by referring them to textbooks, notes, and other course information sources, and demonstrating how to use them.
Ask open-ended questions to check for students’ understanding, giving students adequate time to think. Avoids lecturing on course content and doing students’ homework.
Works with students to develop effective problem-solving and critical thinking strategies.
Completes scheduled tutor training and participates in additional training and meetings as needed.
Communicates tutoring methods and results by completing session feedback forms.
Assesses own work performance and adherence to tutoring objectives by completing regular self-evaluations and conferences with tutor coordinator.
Maintains regular contact with tutor coordinator to discuss tutoring issues and receive assistance and feedback.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
